Meet Our Chickens

Our chickens are the best!  Well I know everyone says that, but seriously…

The Speckled Sussex.

Our chicken can trace their linage back to the Royal tables (I mean coops) of Britain.  The Speckled Sussex was so famous and so sought after that the Romans invaded Britain in 43 AD!!  The Speckled Sussex was then rumored to have hung our with Caesar, though that may just be bragging from proud relatives.  They don’t like to talk about it but the Speckled Sussex was originally a table bird but given their awesome egg production quickly became a “dual-purpose” bird, helping out in the kitchen and on the table!!  Supposedly Speckled Sussex are responsible for the title and job of English Butler’s, at least that is what they tell me.

The Speckled Sussex is an alert, curious and docile breed that adapt easily to any surroundings.  They are comfortable in both free range or confined spaces and they are not shy around people!  If you let your Speckled Sussex have free range of the yard they will explore and forage with the military discipline of a British Battalion!  Speckled Sussex are very industrious and will produce around 240-260 eggs per year.  Unfortunately they only seem content to produce standard light brown/tan egg, no coloring or decorating regardless of the available supplies.  (Guess you can’t have everything!)

As peeps they have a unique coloring which with what appears to be dark racing stripes down their backs.  That fits since they love to run around and have fun.

Speckled Sussex ChicksHere are a few of our latest additions at about 3 days old.  This was taken back in early June, they have grown quiet a bit since then, but we have been a little busy (summer is crunch time on a farm!).  We will post more recent pictures soon.
